Nazi Motorcycles

Who knows their motorcycles?   I noticed this on the street in Gythion.  My first thought knowing how proud the Greeks are of their resistance to the German invasion and occupation is that this is a war trophy.  I have seen this before in towns on Crete, BMW motorcycles proudly displayed in front of shops as a monument to their expulsion of the Nazi occupiers.  But that was decades ago and I don't remember the details of the models used by Germany during World War II.

Archaeological Musings

After a trip to the New Museum of Egyptian Civilization today we will head to Tell Timai.  Two years, Two Thousand Years, ancient Thmouis has been waiting. Nervous, like when I will finally see my family and sweet Finn the Schnauzer...scared to see the damage done by looters and development...so excited to get back to the work of writing a forgotten corner of history.  I never imagined the amount of history that would be uncovered when we started at Tell |Timai in 2009:

-Evidence of Greek economic engagement and settlement dating to the Late Period/Early Hellenistic

-Center of Ceramic Product

-Uncovering the perfume industry

-Completely new and unprecedented evidence of the violence of the Great Rebellion of the Rosetta Stone

-Brand new information about the beginning and end of Cleopatra VIIs reign

-A mystery temple that we suspect is very important...details to follow.

-Hoards and more

-and oh, the stuff coming form the Roman period is, based on what we have seen so far, is amazing.

Exciting News!  After a long hiatus, we will be back in the field in Egypt next month.  We are on the edge of some big discoveries, some coming out in the Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology and if I get my arse in gear, the Journal of Field Archaeology.  A colleague, one of our supervisors who has been with the project since his undergraduate days in 2009, Dr. James Bennett has made a major discovery.  We have been putting the pieces together and when we can announce it, it will be quite an important contribution to Ptolemaic history.
